Gemenc Béda-Karapancsa

The water of Danube has incredibly high value of plant nutritiants, which is the main cause of waterlogging, low level oxigen-states and in the end the damage of living systems. Also, on the other hand,  along the Danube, which has a lot of free waterstock, in the area of Gemenc, and Béda-Karapancsa, there are wet habitats with a rich diversity of species, and these areas are threatened by drought.
So the area has a double enviromental problem. The solution to these is running the water from Danube to areas of environmental importance, which can help lessen th water shortage at these places. At the same time, the quality of the water rises, because the areas plant life can absorb the nutritiants. To achieve all this, a program has been started by funding of the World Bank, the basic aim of which is to raise the water quality of Danube, the whole watershed, and in the end The Black Sea, and also, directing water to the area of Gemenc and Béda-karapancsa. With the controlling of water int he area, there is an opportunity to return to old farming methods and also there will be a chance for plantlife to develop again, this raising the aesthetic and recreational quality of the area. In Béda-karapancsa, after a preparationalperiod of several years, the project by GEF has started with the help and facilitation of DDKÖVIZIG, to rehabilitate the landscape of Duna_drava National Park in the areas previously mentioned.  

The main aim of this project is to help the flood-plain, anabranches and oxbows of Danube to lessen the nutrition-amount of the water, in order to get propaer management and discharge of water. The oxbows are important because most of the plantlife which absorb nutritiant live here and also they can take in extra water and store it. With their help, the euthrophisation and nutrition-load of water int he Black Sea gets less and less, and also the habitats around and along the river will have better chances of developing. The rehabilitation includes ten water systems int he area of Gemenc and Béda-Karapancsa, with several interventions depending ont he scene, these include dredging and building several objects to control the water system. 

The sample area of the GEF project is the dreding if the inner oxbow at Béda, the corection of water-supply and the raising of water-depth. As a result of the project, the nutrition-absorbing quality of the area will increase to a great deal. One can also take into account the growth of forest and wood management output, and the improvement of fishing and eco-tourism. Therefore we can say the program will be useful for economic, and not just for environmental reasons.
