GEF PROJECT
In the growth of underwater plantlife, phosphorus (phosphate) and nitrogen (nitrate and ammonium) play an essential role. The main sources of these are water purification systems, outpours from fields and human settlements, and artificial fertilizers.
The project aims to raise the quality level of water in Danube and the Black Sea by lowering the nutrition emittion at Budapest, which is the biggest pollutant in Hungary, and also by raising the level of nutrition absorbants ont he lower levels of the Dnube at Gemenc and Béda-Karapancsa. Due to the project, both above and below Budapest, people can enjoy the recreational activities and holiday opportunities offered by the river.
The project is under way with joint funding by the EU and the World Bank, and partly national and local governmental funds. The total sum of the project is 32 million american dollars, in it, the non-refundable 12,5 million dollars by the Global Environmental Facility. This is supplemented by 7,7 million dollars from the Local Govermental Projects of Wastewater management, also 1,4 million dollars by the local goverment of Budapest, and 1,4 million dollars from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Water.
